If you haven't already joined the group, its http://groups.myspace.com/ArtistsUniteToHelpNewOrleans.
I started this Project the day Katrina hit NOLA. I remember waking up to the destruction on the news and families trying to evacuate...I got right up, and got on my computer.
What disgusted me is that I always wanted to go to New Orleans. I remember going to an exhibit for Savannah College of Art and Design when I was 16, (they were recruiting me for college at the time), and they had these pieces up of "New Orleans Artwork"...i loved it! Not to mention it was the first time I had heard of a city that had a genre of art all on its own. I'll never forget the one piece...it was a large canvas, with a womans leg in a high heel coming across the front of the painting like she was placing it on a chair to fix her fishnets. The fishnets were so detailed, and the work was so bright, vivid, and flourescent. It had a loopy kind of cafe in the background, with all different types of design marks...slashes, etc, all to define and add to the image, but not take away from the pattern of the fishnets. It was awesome! Right there I knew i wanted to go to New Orleans. I never made it down there, and the first thought that ran through my head that day.... all that work is lost. I know people lost lives, and houses, and its all such a tragedy, but the culture is gone, as well.... this city...the only place I have ever heard of with a specific art style...was destroyed. I knew I had to do something.
Have you ever heard of a city with its own TYPE of ART? I didnt either...until that day at the gallery, and it instantly struck a cord in my mind. I didnt forget.
As I am sure all of you have seen and heard about the destruction in New Orleans, this city of culture and so much, has lost everything. It makes me sick. Not many of us have the money to donate or to do what we all wish we could...but I think I have found a small way we can help.
My idea is help give back to New Orleans all the art they lost, and the culture to which was so unique. I think that if a bunch of great artists banned together, we could do a hell of a lot of paintings, and sell them with some or all of the proceeds going a fund to rebuild the city, (which is their main economic source for the state), help the families, and artists alike.
So, to anyone that is interested, or has contacts to help in this venture, or knows any artists, musicians, or anyone that wants to help, please pass this on, and contact me through Alicia.ArtistsUniteToHelp@gmail.com .
I'm looking for artists mainly in the North Jersey/NYC area, or any willing to travel or ship work.We have artists In over 15 states now donating, and Canada.
For any further details, or to submit some input, please contact. If you are not an artist yourself, or want to help, contact me about maybe helping us get some supplies and such for this effort, or any networking help you may be able to give to get this project started. I think this is a great idea to give back to the world, and an opportunity to help people, and a city of such artistic culture....most of which is lost.
Its our time to give back...to show them through art, anything is possible....
Thank you, and I hope to get a lot of emails on this....lets all work together and set this up!
** to date (2/15) we have over 40 artists representing over 20 states and two countries, some totaling at least $2000 per artist... some great board members to start this as a non profit org., and help is needed in all areas. Lend a hand...and don't forget.
